The reason behind Folwen
Family deserves more than a group thread
Something worth making.
A group conversation is useful for the moment. It is less useful for finding a memory months later, understanding who can see an update, or keeping different households connected on their own terms. Folwen starts with that gap.
Families have structure, and that structure changes. A person may belong to more than one household; relatives may want to share some things widely and keep other things close. Family Spaces give those choices a place in the product itself.
A family archive should also remain useful beyond the service that holds it. Export and a self-hosting path are part of how Folwen approaches that responsibility. Development is focused on making connection, control, and continuity work together in ordinary family life.
The things that matter.
Start with the household
Give each family a space it can manage, then let households build connections around it.
Share deliberately
Make audiences explicit so a family connection does not become an automatic grant of access.
Keep a way forward
Treat export and self-hosting as part of a family home that can last.
